Co-anchors Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, and Michael Strahan reflected on how their families’ histories shaped their identities and their perspectives on American heritage.

Robin Roberts: A Legacy of Service and Education

Robin Roberts delved into her family’s journey through the generations, tracing their lineage back to great-great-grandparents. Her father, Lawrence Roberts, served as a Tuskegee Airman during World War II, a role he secured after his mother reached out to a local New Jersey politician for support. While studying at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Lawrence met his future wife, Lucimarian, who became a key figure in their family’s story.

"Education was such a big part of her life," said Butch Roberts, Robin’s brother, describing their late mother. "Her parents and grandparents never went beyond high school, so she became the first in the family to pursue higher learning."

Lucimarian’s grandfather, J.M. Tolliver, once owned a 120-acre farm in Alabama and later established a church in Akron, Ohio, after relocating for work. The family emphasized the importance of preserving history, with Butch noting, "If we don’t write these stories down, they’re lost forever."

George Stephanopoulos: Bridging Greek Heritage and American Life

George Stephanopoulos highlighted his family’s dual legacy of Greek tradition and American adaptation. His maternal grandfather emigrated from Patras, Greece, in 1912, working on railroads and in domestic jobs before settling in Rochester, Minnesota, and launching a shoe repair business. His paternal grandfather, a missionary priest, left Neochori in 1938 to minister to Greek communities in the West, eventually establishing roots in Montana.

"In the Greek church, priests can get married before being ordained," George explained. "My dad completed his seminary training, then they married and began their lives together."

Stephanopoulos’ parents met at a church convention, and he was born in Fall River, Massachusetts. The family raised four children in Cleveland, Ohio, balancing Greek customs with American values. "I’ve always felt lucky to be part of both worlds," he said, "fully American and fully Greek."

Michael Strahan: A Family’s Resilience and Tradition

Michael Strahan shared how his family’s resilience contributed to their American journey. His ancestors arrived in the U.S. seeking opportunities, with his mother’s relatives facing imprisonment in Greece for opposing Nazi rule during World War II. The Strahan family’s commitment to preserving their heritage remains a central theme in their story.
