US Citizen Detained by Chinese Authorities on Espionage Allegations

US citizen arrested by Chinese government - Chinese officials have reported the detention of a U.S. citizen, U Min Zin, under suspicion of engaging in espionage activities that threaten national security. The foreign ministry's spokesperson, Lin Jian, announced the arrest during a press briefing on Friday, stating that the individual was "lawfully subjected to criminal compulsory measures" by relevant authorities.

"Min Zin is suspected of conducting espionage activities that endanger China's national security," Lin Jian explained.

The Chinese government informed the U.S. consulate in Guangzhou about the arrest, though no further specifics were provided. Min Zin, a prominent scholar on Myanmar's political landscape, has been a key figure in the democracy movement since the late 1980s. He fled the country in 1989 to evade potential prosecution.

Min Zin currently serves as the executive director of The Institute for Strategy and Policy (Myanmar), a think tank focused on the nation's political developments. He is also known for his publications analyzing Myanmar's governance. A file photo from March 2008 shows him participating in a forum at the Czech Foreign Ministry in Prague, highlighting his role as a freedom advocate.

According to the think tank's announcement in May, Min Zin was set to address an event in Nepal this month. The U.S. State Department confirmed awareness of the arrest, emphasizing its commitment to protecting American citizens. A department official stated, "Our priority is the safety and security of Americans. We provide consular assistance when detainees are held, but federal privacy laws limit our ability to disclose additional details."
