Young Siblings in Car Accident After 7-Year-Old Drives Into Oakland Crosswalk

Tyunews.com – Police reported that a toddler-aged driver operated a vehicle that collided with a pedestrian and her dog in an Oakland crosswalk on Thursday morning. The woman, described as being in her thirties, sustained critical injuries during the incident. Two young boys were inside the car when the accident happened, and officers confirmed both are younger than ten years old.

Sequence of Events

The crash took place approximately at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time according to law enforcement officials. Surveillance footage captured the white vehicle sideswiping another car traveling in the opposite direction before veering toward the crosswalk. A woman had just entered the crosswalk with her dog moments before the collision occurred.

The juvenile driver first struck a separate vehicle, then lost control and hit the pedestrian. The car eventually crashed into a retaining wall nearby. Airbags deployed during the impact, which one witness observed caused one of the children to be thrown toward the rear of the vehicle.

Aftermath and Injuries

The injured woman was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Both boys were also taken to a medical facility where they were reported to be in stable condition. The seven-year-old driver sustained a broken leg, while his four-year-old brother suffered a concussion, according to a family member speaking with KGO, the ABC San Francisco station.

"The airbags did deploy, so I did see one of the kids fly to the back because when the airbag deployed, it hit him so hard," witness Lavelle Shah-Marquis told KGO. "These kids were so small."

Shah-Marquis also described seeing the pedestrian lying motionless on the ground after the accident. "To me she seemed really lifeless," he recalled.

Parents and Investigation

A family member explained that the boys' parents were sleeping at home when the children found the car keys and drove off. The Oakland Police Department stated that officers have contacted the parents, who are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

ABC News' Jennifer Watts contributed to this report.
