Since at least June, Trump has maintained that the Reflecting Pool damage—resulting from his order to resurface the bottom in “American flag blue”—was intentionally caused by criminal vandals. During an Oval Office interview on June 22, the president remarked, “I can’t help it if somebody goes in with a knife and starts hacking it up. And we also have pictures of it.” However, when questioned about sharing those photographs, Trump declined to provide them immediately, stating they would appear “in court.”
The Justice Department formally requested dismissal of Hearn’s case in July, recognizing that “flawed installation by the contractor” caused the pool damage.
