To close that gap, the campaign is counting on a high-profile intervention: President Donald Trump will headline a Houston fundraiser on Aug. 27, a source confirmed to ABC News. The event is expected to pull in millions of dollars for a campaign that has been cash-strapped for months.

A Fundraising Chasm Measured Against Cornyn’s Legacy

The scale of Paxton’s shortfall becomes clearer when benchmarked against the incumbent he unseated. An ABC News analysis of FEC reports reveals that Paxton’s cumulative totals lag behind what Republican Sen. John Cornyn had raised during the same window of his 2020 reelection bid by more than $13 million. Cornyn’s end-of-June 2020 haul stood at roughly $22.4 million; Paxton’s end-of-June 2026 figure sits at $9.2 million.

Donor breadth tells an equally stark story. From the start of the year through June, Paxton attracted fewer than 4,200 unique individual contributors. Cornyn, during the parallel stretch of his 2020 campaign, drew more than 6,200.

Why the Gap Persists

Texas is a sprawling state with several high-cost media markets, making any Senate contest there extraordinarily expensive. Republicans are working to defend — or grow — their 53-47 Senate majority, which raises the stakes for every dollar raised in the Lone Star State.

Yet Democratic fundraising momentum in Texas has not yet converted into statewide victories; no Democrat has carried a statewide ticket there in over three decades. Still, turnout data from the Texas secretary of state shows more Democrats cast ballots in last March’s Senate primary than Republicans did, signaling genuine enthusiasm that operatives on both sides believe could make the fall race competitive.

Campaign Desperation and Donor Alienation

Paxton’s team has leaned into urgency in its outreach, firing off emails with subject lines such as “This is bad. Very bad!” and “Outraised by over 300%.” On a recent Fox News appearance, the nominee made a direct appeal to the donor base:

“We’re trying to get help from all over the country,” Paxton said. “We need help.”

That appeal, however, may fall on deaf ears among Cornyn’s former backers. Multiple six-figure donors told ABC News that Paxton’s record of controversies and scandals has soured them on contributing. One Texas-based GOP consultant urged the campaign to begin calling Cornyn’s donor list directly, warning that Paxton should expect “uncomfortable questions” and noting that “the vast majority of major GOP donors and business leaders in Texas don’t like Paxton.”

Erle Nye, a Cornyn donor and former chief executive of utilities firm TXU, told ABC News he will neither vote for nor fund Paxton, and that friends of his are weighing a vote for Talarico.

“I don’t think he really adequately represents the state of Texas in that very valuable and important position,” Nye said. “I think he is what he is.”

Poll Numbers and the Road Ahead

An August Texas Pulse poll captured the nominee’s weak standing among likely voters: 40% favorable, 52% unfavorable, and 55% describing Paxton as corrupt. On the head-to-head Senate question, the race sat inside the margin of error — 47% backing Talarico against 43% for Paxton.

Paxton’s path to the general ballot came via a Trump-endorsed surge over incumbent Cornyn in the May runoff. In the 2024 presidential contest, Trump carried Texas by nearly 14 percentage points, and Cornyn had won reelection in 2020 — reminders that the state’s electoral leanings, while Republican, do not guarantee automatic success for every GOP candidate.

The Aug. 27 Trump fundraiser in Houston will be the single largest test of whether the nominee can convert presidential name-recognition into the cash needed to compete across Texas’s costly media landscape before November.
