Maine Senate Race: Democratic Candidate Graham Platner Exits Contest

“I write to formally withdraw my candidacy for the United States Senate.”
This move marks the end of his bid to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins in the November general election.
Platner secured over 70% of the vote in Maine’s Democratic primary on June 9, 2026, positioning him as a frontrunner for the party’s nomination. However, the withdrawal came just days after a source revealed his intent to file the paperwork by Monday, the final deadline for such actions. The decision followed mounting pressure from Democratic leaders, including Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, who had initially backed his campaign.

Earlier this week, Politico reported on an accusation from Jenny Racicot, a former girlfriend, claiming Platner pressured her into sexual encounters without consent. The allegation, dated five years prior, was part of a broader narrative about his conduct. Platner has consistently denied the claim, labeling it as
“categorically false.”
Hours after his withdrawal, the Maine Democratic Party announced a convention to select a new nominee for the Senate seat on July 25. The event, set just two days before the July 27 deadline, will include 601 delegates from the state’s 16 counties. Of these, 101 are elected by voters, while the rest are county-appointed representatives. The process will involve multiple voting rounds to determine the winner, with the convention livestreamed for public access.

Democratic State Committee Chair Charlie Dingman emphasized the importance of the convention, stating,
“The convention will be fair, representative, and as transparent as possible as we all come together in service of our ultimate goal: defeat Susan Collins and win this Senate seat.”
In his withdrawal letter, Platner highlighted the need for change, writing,
“Maine voters want change and to further the American dream. People are desperate for change… For this broken system to be righted. For the American experiment to be furthered.”
He also noted,
“My name may have been on the ballot, but that ballot line belongs to the people of Maine.”
Platner’s campaign has been marred by previous controversies, such as sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women and a tattoo featuring Nazi imagery. He explained that he was unaware of the tattoo’s symbolism and took steps to conceal it once informed. When addressing the explicit texts, Platner stated,
“People don’t care about gossip or headlines, they care that you’re fighting for their hospitals, their paycheck, their kids.”
