Tyunews.com – White House Border Czar Tom Homan declared Monday that he is pushing for body cameras to be issued to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers “as soon as possible.” This urgent call comes as the Department of Homeland Security encounters mounting demands to accelerate the equipment rollout following two fatal shootings involving ICE personnel.

Speaking with journalists outside the White House, Homan revealed that cameras had already been procured for officers across the nation. He noted that by the previous week, ICE was actively “training the trainers” to instruct personnel on proper camera usage. Although DHS had committed months earlier to equipping agents with body cameras, concerns about the deployment timeline emerged this month after ICE officers without cameras were involved in two separate incidents in Maine and Houston.

In both cases, the individuals who lost their lives were not the primary targets of the enforcement actions. The shootings have intensified calls for accountability and transparency within the agency.

Political Blame and Timeline Disputes

Homan attributed the slower pace of the rollout to Democratic lawmakers in Congress, asserting that a government shutdown during the spring had postponed essential funding for the equipment. He explained that ICE required considerable time and resources to recruit personnel, establish storage facilities, and prepare for an anticipated surge in Freedom of Information Act requests once the cameras became operational.

“As soon as possible, if I had it my way,” Homan stated regarding the timeline for complete deployment.

However, a group of Democratic senators, joined by Maine independent Senator Angus King, challenged this perspective in a letter sent to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin on Sunday. The lawmakers argued that the department “has had more than sufficient time and funding” to distribute the cameras to agents.

The senators pointed out that acting ICE director David Venturella had informed members of Congress that the cameras would be fully operational by the end of July. They characterized this date “not as a projection, but as a firm, binding commitment.” Representative Sylvia Garcia confirmed that Venturella had extended the same assurance to her recently.

Vehicle Stop Policy and Officer Vetting

The practice of vehicle stops has come under particular examination, as this operation type led to both fatal incidents this month. The Department initially suspended most vehicle stops early last week, but President Trump reversed that decision in less than 24 hours.

Homan confirmed on Monday that every vehicle stop must now include at least one individual with a functioning body camera. Additionally, officers will be required to keep their cameras recording throughout the entire duration of the stop.

When asked about potential policy adjustments, Homan maintained that no other changes were planned for officers. He also deferred questions regarding the background check process for the ICE officer involved in the Maine shooting of Johan Sebastian Guerrero last week.

“That’s a question for ICE. That’s under investigation. I’m sure that part now is part of the investigation,” Homan said when addressing the officer’s alleged past incidents. “We’ll let the investigation play out.”

Emphasizing the importance of personnel quality, Homan added, “I can’t speak for everyone in the administration, but quality agents are very important. If you’re going to give somebody a badge and gun, they need to be the best they can be.”

FBI Investigation Role Clarified

Homan also addressed a report from The New York Times suggesting that the FBI would no longer participate in investigating assaults against ICE officers. Both the FBI and DHS issued a joint statement declaring the coverage “false,” confirming that the “FBI will continue to investigate in accordance with agency policy.”

“The FBI is still going to continue to lead shooting investigations. As far as I’m concerned, I’m not aware of any change in policy, and I think the FBI and DHS actually pushed back on that story,” Homan explained on Monday.
