Trump Labels Joint Drills an “Insult” to Kim Jong Un as Exercises End Early

Tyunews.com – President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday that the combined U.S.-South Korea military exercises constitute an affront directed at North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un. His remarks followed a Pentagon confirmation that the drills — originally slated to run through August 27 — would be cut short by one week, wrapping up on Friday instead.

Trump indicated he plans to sit down with the North Korean leader later this year, though he declined to confirm whether the two have been corresponding by letter. Earlier in the week, he had signaled that contact between him and Kim had already taken place after he directed the exercises be scaled back.

Pyongyang Dismisses the Shortening

North Korea responded on Wednesday by maintaining that the drills remain “provocative” and that trimming their duration alters nothing about the bilateral relationship.

“We think it’s not worth making comments on that and we have no interest in it at all,” Kim Yo Jong, Kim Jong Un’s sister, told state media. “The provocative, aggressive nature of the drills won’t change even though their duration and size were reduced.”

Observers widely note that Pyongyang has been lending material support to American rivals, reportedly shipping weapons to Iran and dispatching troops to reinforce Russia’s campaign in Ukraine.

Trump Defends His Personal Tie to Kim

When pressed on whether he still pursues a denuclearization agenda — after suggesting earlier that Wednesday that North Korea possessed 57 nuclear weapons — Trump sidestepped the question.

“Well, I don’t want to talk about that. But I do have a good relationship with Kim Jong Un,” he stated, adding that no other president had enjoyed the kind of rapport he claimed with Kim.

“But he likes me, and I like — I, you know, I just got along with him very good,” he continued. “We had — we had great meetings. We speak, and I think our nation and I think other nations, frankly, whether it’s Japan or South Korea, they’re a lot safer if I’m president than if somebody else is president.”

Those remarks referenced the three face-to-face encounters the two leaders held during Trump’s first term, two of which were formal summits. None of those meetings yielded an agreement on denuclearization.

Missile Tests and Broader Tensions

North Korea has conducted multiple ballistic missile tests this year, including two launches in August that preceded the U.S.-South Korea joint exercise. The most recent firing, detected last Wednesday by South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Japan’s Defense Ministry, underscored ongoing tensions in the region.

Trump also took aim at Seoul, criticizing South Korea for failing to assist the United States in its conflict with Iran.

“Now, I didn’t like the fact that we’re doing these massive military exercises really against North Korea,” he said. “I felt that to do a massive — we were doing a massive war exercise. I thought that was very insulting to somebody that, frankly, has been, during my term at least, very well-behaved.”

The drills in question formed part of the Combined Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore 2026 (CJLOTS 2026) exercise, which included amphibious offloading demonstrations at Pohang Port, South Korea, on July 16, 2026.
