The remark came hours after Sen. Darline Graham, R-S.C., took the stage in Newberry, S.C., for a special Republican runoff debate pitting her against Norman. The contest determines who will occupy the seat vacated by the death of longtime senator and Trump ally Lindsey Graham at age 71. Graham had been recommended to complete her brother’s term and received Trump’s endorsement before launching her bid for a full term.

The Debate Moment

When a moderator posed a question about whether Taiwan and the South China Sea constitute national security concerns for the United States, Graham first requested that the question be repeated. She then offered a candid admission that drew audible boos from the audience.

“I’m just going to be honest here — I’m not, on national security, that — I’m not that informed on national security. So,” she said, trailing off for a moment.

Graham went on to frame her position around family ties to the armed forces rather than policy expertise.

“But I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. I’m not a polished politician up here. National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise, but I do support the military.”

Norman’s Counterpoint

Norman, who placed second in the primary behind Graham, answered the same Taiwan question by praising the president’s posture as one of “peace through strength.” He argued that the administration’s approach deters hostile nations from acting against American interests.

“Taiwan’s a definite all. … what the president is doing right is he’s enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China. But it’s peace through strength that he’s showing with Iran that China, Russia, others are looking at it, so that they don’t want to deal with America, and that’s why they haven’t attacked Taiwan,” Norman said.

Post-Debate Framing

A Graham spokesperson, speaking after the event, directed attention to remarks the senator made to reporters once the debate concluded. Graham told the press that South Carolinians prioritize household economics over geopolitical questions.

That framing aligns with her broader campaign positioning as a political outsider who intends to concentrate on domestic priorities such as the cost of living, a contrast she has drawn explicitly against her late brother’s record.

Trump’s Parallel Criticism and Upcoming Rally

The president has not commented directly on the Newberry debate, but his reaction to a similar stumble by Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at the Munich Security Conference in February offers context for how he views such gaffles. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump described Ocasio-Cortez’s answer as a disaster.

“Well, her performance was horrible. I was surprised, actually. I didn’t know she was stupid,” Trump said. “She had no idea. I don’t think she knew what Taiwan was. That was her problem.”

Graham, who has been introducing herself to voters across the state while campaigning for a full term, announced Tuesday that Trump will join her for a rally in Myrtle Beach on Friday. Graham finished first and Norman second in the special primary, setting up the runoff scheduled for next Tuesday.
