Wisconsin’s Gubernatorial Upset

In what many considered a major surprise, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley secured a narrow victory in the Democratic primary for governor. The centrist Democrat edged out Wisconsin assemblywoman Francesca Hong, a democratic socialist, in a contest that became a critical test for progressive ambitions in an essential swing state.

Crowley, a former state legislator, positioned himself as the strongest contender to unseat Republican Representative Tom Tiffany—who carries Trump’s backing—in the November general election. His campaign emphasized his administrative background managing the state’s largest county. This triumph marks a remarkable recovery for Crowley, who withdrew from the race on July 8 when his campaign faltered. However, Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez’s departure shortly afterward triggered a rush among Democrats to consolidate behind a moderate alternative to Hong. Hong presented herself as a champion for working families, promoting universal childcare and calling for ICE’s elimination. She maintained that voters were prepared for “transformational change.”

While Hong heavily promoted a one-year moratorium on AI data center construction, Crowley favored implementing regulatory guardrails instead. During the final weeks, her campaign encountered heightened examination of previous social media comments, particularly her characterization of Thanksgiving as a “colonizer holiday.” Although she recently appeared to distance herself from the Democratic Socialists of America’s national agenda, she faced criticism from both parties regarding her earlier positions.

Hong had previously advocated for police defunding and eventual abolition, though she clarified she would not pursue this policy as governor. She also campaigned alongside leftist streamer Hasan Piker and Minnesota Representative Ilhan Omar. Notably, prominent democratic socialist leaders—Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez—declined to endorse Hong.

Should Crowley win, he would make history as Wisconsin’s first Black governor. He is scheduled to confront Republican Representative Tom Tiffany, who enjoys Trump’s support, this November.

South Carolina’s Inconclusive Results

The special Republican primary for U.S. Senate in South Carolina produced somewhat ambiguous outcomes.
