Archaeologists unveil skeletal remains believed to be ritual offering in Peru

Skeletal Remains Unearthed at Lima’s Ancient Pyramid Point to Ritual Sacrifice

Tyunews.com – Near the foot of Huaca Pucllana, a centuries-old adobe pyramid rising above modern Lima, archaeologists revealed the bones of an adult male on Tuesday. The team believes the individual was interred as a ceremonial offering during a ritual that sealed a canal connected to a sacred pool.

Gladys Paz, the archaeologist directing the dig, explained that the skeleton lay within the canal itself, positioned on its left side. The skull was oriented toward both the pyramid structure and the Pacific Ocean beyond.

“The rituals of the Lima culture” — Paz noted that these bones will allow scholars to reconstruct ceremonies carried out hundreds of years ago and deepen understanding of how the ancient society practiced its spiritual life.

A Lost Coastal Civilization

The Lima culture thrived along Peru’s dry central coastline from the first through the seventh centuries, predating the Inca Empire by roughly seven hundred years. Huaca Pucllana served as one of the principal ceremonial and administrative hubs of that civilization, which had already vanished long before Spanish conquistadors established the city of Lima in 1535.

Pyramid Amid the Modern City

Today the ancient structure sits encircled by tree-lined avenues, public parks, and high-end residential towers in the Miraflores and San Isidro districts. Visitors can tour the site, and an on-site restaurant offers Peruvian dishes including ceviche, stir-fried beef, and roasted alpaca.

Peru’s government reports that more than 400 archaeological sites are scattered throughout the metropolitan Lima area.

Burial Finds Along the Coast

Pieter Van Dalen, an archaeology professor at the National University of San Marcos who had no role in this particular excavation, observed that tombs, mummified bodies, and other funerary objects are routinely encountered along the Peruvian shoreline. He added that such finds sometimes surface when construction crews excavate trenches for gas pipelines.
