Washington Honors Senator Lindsey Graham with Capitol Ceremony and Cathedral Funeral

On Tuesday, political leaders from across the country and international dignitaries gathered for both a congressional tribute on Capitol Hill and a funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral.
Capitol Rotunda Tribute
The senator’s journey through the nation’s capital began with a solemn ceremony in the Capitol rotunda. His casket, covered with the American flag, was carried by members of the Air Force Body Bearer Team before being received by family members on the Capitol steps. Among those present was his sister, Senator Darline Graham Nordone, who offered her personal respects.
A bipartisan group of senators attended the proceedings. Senate Majority Leader John Thune and Vice President JD Vance delivered addresses, alongside South Carolina Republican Representative Sheri Briggs.
“To Lindsey, rest in peace, my friend. I look forward to the days when you make us all laugh again,” Thune said, appearing emotional as he concluded his remarks. He highlighted Graham’s contributions to national security, defense policy, his work on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and his dedication to pro-life causes.
Vice President Vance reflected on Graham’s ability to maintain friendships through disagreement. “I choose to remember Lindsey Graham as a person who could fight with you on one issue, but fight for you on another issue,” he stated, recalling an intense debate the two had regarding Ukraine that did not diminish Graham’s support for Vance on other matters.
“I remember Lindsey Graham as a man who loved people, and because he loved people, he was willing to reason with them, to respect them, and ultimately to persuade them,” Vance continued. “It was impossible not to like him — that swashbuckling, infectious laugh, that attitude, that passion that so many others have talked about. Lindsey Graham was impossible not to like as a human being, and of course, as a United States senator.”
A Life of Service
Graham spent more than twenty years in the Senate, emerging as one of the chamber’s most visible Republican figures. He maintained a close relationship with President Donald Trump, serving as an adviser on foreign policy matters, including the recent conflict in Iran. His role on the Senate Judiciary Committee made him a prominent presence in legislative affairs.
The senator passed away unexpectedly on July 11 at the age of 71. According to preliminary findings from the Medical Examiner of the District of Columbia, the cause of death was “aortic dissection due to arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease.”
Funeral Service at the Cathedral
Later on Tuesday, the Washington National Cathedral will host Graham’s funeral service. According to the service program, President Trump is scheduled to speak at the ceremony. Other speakers include Sean Hannity and Graham’s niece, Emillie Boggs Roberts.
As the nation mourns, a U.S. flag flies at half-staff in tribute to the late senator, whose legacy of friendship, debate, and public service will be remembered by colleagues and citizens alike.
