Advisors Weigh In on Escalation Risks
Both General Dan Caine, who serves as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Vice President Vance expressed apprehension about broadening the conflict with Iran, two sources revealed to ABC News. According to those sources, Caine informed the president that while the armed forces possess the capacity to execute the contemplated options, he outlined potential drawbacks. These included concerns about further depleting existing munitions reserves.
Advisors characterized the ammunition situation as just one element among many factors considered by the president alongside his national security team.
Vance, who has assumed a prominent role in diplomatic negotiations, has consistently pushed for a peaceful resolution, sources indicated.
Trump’s Public Statements on Munitions
Speaking with Axios on Monday, the president shared that “All of the people that deal with Iran asked me: ‘Don’t fire.'” He later issued a statement to ABC News asserting, “We have far more munitions than anyone in the world, and far more than we need.” Trump continued by criticizing the previous administration, claiming that “The Biden administration diminished the stockpile.” He further noted that “Our defense companies are, at this moment, making more munitions than they have ever made before, in addition to expanding their plants and equipment at record levels. And as we build up, we will start issuing more to our allies in Europe and elsewhere.”
A representative for Caine provided a brief response, stating, “We do not comment on the confidential military advice the Chairman provides the President.”
Diplomatic Progress Beneath the Surface
A U.S. official explained to ABC News that despite heightened attacks, there has been a steady progression of technical-level diplomatic discussions showing potential advancement on critical matters such as the Strait of Hormuz. “The duck has been paddling below the surface,” the official remarked.
Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi clarified that his country’s delegation has not made any appeals or requests to maintain negotiations. Meanwhile, White House communications director Steven Cheung released a statement emphasizing, “President Trump has always been consistent in saying he prefers a diplomatic solution, but he continues to retain all options if Iran continues terrorist activities in the Strait of Hormuz or against allies.”
