Mamdani’s support for three House candidates has been a central focus, with his public appearances and campaign videos amplifying their visibility. Last week, he joined U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders at a rally to bolster his chosen representatives, aiming to solidify his role as a key figure in the movement. “The party of the past will not be what leads us into the future. We need a Democratic Party with backbone,” Mamdani asserted, underscoring his vision for a reformed political agenda.
Jack Schlossberg’s Bid and Opposition
In a closely contested race, Jack Schlossberg, a 33-year-old heir to former President John F. Kennedy’s legacy, is leveraging his social media presence and familial ties to secure a congressional seat in Manhattan. However, he faces formidable challenges from Alex Bores, a state Assembly member embroiled in a debate over Silicon Valley funding for AI regulations, and Micah Lasher, a seasoned political operative backed by prominent Democratic leaders. Schlossberg’s campaign concluded with a joint appearance by David Letterman, while his mother, Caroline Kennedy, contributed to a promotional ad.
Other Races and Strategic Endorsements
George Conway, a former attorney married to a top Trump advisor, is also vying for a congressional seat, marking a notable shift in his political alignment. Meanwhile, Darializa Avila Chevalier, a democratic socialist endorsed by Mamdani, is targeting U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the first Dominican American elected to Congress from a district spanning northern Manhattan and parts of the Bronx. Espaillat has countered by emphasizing Avila Chevalier’s past social media posts, casting doubt on her credibility. Brad Lander, who received Mamdani’s backing, is campaigning to replace Dan Goldman, a fellow Democrat who did not support the mayor in his mayoral race.
Brooklyn Race and Progressive Alliances
Mamdani also supports Claire Valdez, a former state Assembly colleague, in her effort to unseat Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. Both Valdez and Reynoso are progressives with overlapping policies, but Valdez has positioned herself as a potential collaborator for Mamdani in national politics, contrasting with Reynoso’s established presence in local governance.
