Leading the National League West division, the Dodgers entered the deadline as favorites to become the first franchise since the New York Yankees’ 1998-2000 run to achieve three consecutive championships. The organization began the campaign with a $323.3 million opening-day payroll for their 40-man roster, plus a $163.7 million luxury tax, bringing their total investment to $487.1 million. For the remainder of this season, Skubal will receive approximately $9.5 million under his current contract.

Tigers Receive Prospects in Return

According to ESPN, which initially reported the agreement, Detroit will receive three minor league prospects in return: right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith, along with outfielder Zyhir Hope. Skubal becomes a free agent following the World Series and currently earns $32 million, setting a new record for arbitration compensation after the team initially offered $19 million. He is anticipated to secure a substantial multi-year deal during the upcoming offseason.

In July, the lefty revealed that staying with Detroit through the season was his preference, hoping to finally deliver a World Series title to a franchise that has not won one since 1984. Skubal suffered the loss in the decisive Game 5 of the 2024 division series against Cleveland and recorded a no-decision in a grueling 15-inning defeat to Seattle during Game 5 of last year’s division series.

“Ever since that ’24 Game 5, the failure that I experienced on the mound, I’ve used that as fuel to try and bring a World Series to the city of Detroit. I truly did,” he said. “That whole offseason I’ve never been more motivated and then go in and we lose Game 5 again. That failure kind of sparks some more motivation, just to dig deeper and see how good you can truly be. The goal was always to win a World Series for the city, for the organization that took a chance on me. It’s tough. I love all those guys in there. They’re some of my best friends.”

Tigers’ Season Takes Unexpected Turn

Detroit intended to remain competitive this year, strengthening their Skubal-led pitching staff by signing two-time All-Star Framber Valdez to a $115 million, three-year free agency contract and re-signing three-time All-Star infielder Gleyber Torres with a $22 million agreement. However, the Tigers experienced a difficult beginning and currently sit 2 1/2 games behind the final American League wild-card position.

“It’s crazy. Going into the season, this isn’t what I planned on doing,” Skubal reflected. “But circumstances change, situations change, and I’m very appreciative of everything the Tigers have done for me.”

After struggling early, Detroit recovered during June and most of July to re-enter playoff contention, with Skubal anchoring the rotation and three All-Stars contributing in the lineup: rookie infielder Kevin McGonigle, catcher Dillon Dingler, and outfielder Riley Greene. Hoping to convince management to retain Skubal by improving their standing, Detroit lost ground by dropping four of their final five home contests, including Skubal’s last start, which became particularly memorable due to a late-inning collapse.

The Tigers held a commanding 7-0 lead over Baltimore after six innings on Wednesday before ultimately falling 10-9 in 12 innings. Skubal, who started the game, recorded his 1,000th career strikeout during the contest.
