Man in Custody Following Hospital Shooting in Delaware
Authorities Confirm Suspect’s Arrest
Tyunews.com – Wilmington police confirmed Tuesday that the individual responsible for a fatal shooting at a local hospital has been apprehended. The suspect, identified as a 23-year-old man, was taken into custody in Philadelphia, approximately 40 miles northeast of the city. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. on June 16, 2026, at Wilmington Hospital, according to police reports.
Targeted Shooting Leaves One Dead, One Injured
Law enforcement officials initially indicated that a hospital employee may have fired upon two colleagues during the attack. Police chief Wilfredo Campos described the event as a “targeted, isolated incident” in an update, though details about the suspect’s identity were still being verified at the time.
“Regardless of the motive, there is never an excuse for gun violence,” Campos stated during a press briefing. “Our investigators are working tirelessly to ensure justice is served.”
Investigation Continues with Preliminary Findings
Campos noted that the second victim’s condition remains undisclosed, and the names of the victims have not been released. The hospital was placed on lockdown as officers conducted a search, but the alert has since been lifted. The suspect is believed to have been a temporary staff member, according to earlier reports from law enforcement.
Mayor and Governor Express Concern
Wilmington Mayor John Carney praised the bravery of responding officers during the crisis. “It’s hard to imagine the fear those employees must have felt,” he said, reflecting on the day’s events. Delaware Governor Matt Meyer echoed the sentiment, calling the violence a “sobering reminder” of the impact of gun-related incidents. He added that the attack struck close to home, as he had arrived with his wife, Dr. Lauren Meyer, an emergency room physician, moments before the shooting.
“What I saw were heroes going to work in that building, and heroes who were involved in life-saving efforts leaving at the end of their shift,” Meyer said.
Public Safety Remains a Priority
Policemen emphasized that the information is still under review and could evolve. The investigation continues to uncover more about the incident, which has left the community in mourning and demanding accountability.
